Classroom Participation Patterns

The purpose of this survey is to identify and verify the patterns of participation that English language learners (ELs) demonstrate in elementary grades (K-5). As a teacher of English as a second language (ESL), you interact with these students most of the time and know how they are participating in the classroom. Therefore, your opinion matters the most!

What is the research?

You are being asked to participate in a research study that is being conducted by Dr. Sultan Turkan at Educational Testing Service (ETS). The purpose of this research is to identify and summarize a variety of EL classroom linguistic patterns/responses to teacher questions and prompts.
 
Why are you being asked to participate?
You are being asked to participate because you are a teacher with experience in teaching EL students.

Participation in this study is voluntary

You may choose not to participate in this study, and you may withdraw at any time during the study without any penalty to you. In addition, you may skip any questions which you prefer not answer.


What are the risks to you in taking part in this study?     
The survey does not require you to provide any personally identifiable information. You have the option of providing an active email address if you want to be entered in a gift card drawing to win one of 32 $20 gift cards. There are no known risks or threats involved in taking part in this study.
 

What are the benefits to you in taking part in this study?
You may feel good knowing that your perspectives will assist with the training of future teachers of EL students to deepen their understanding of how ELs may engage in classroom settings and will also support ETS’ ongoing commitment to meet the needs English learning students in the United States.
 
Confidentiality
All data collected from this survey will be stored on a password-protected server that is accessible only to research staff. Individual data will not be reported.  Only aggregated data will be used in any presentation or report that is published. The survey does not ask for you to report your name or school district or any other combination of information that is considered personally identifiably information. You can elect to provide an active email address if you want to be included in the gift card drawing, but it is not required.

What is involved if I choose to participate?

As a study participant, you will be asked to take part in a 10 minute survey.
